Uniformed nurses from Orpington Hospital went to the House of Commons today to hand over a petition to parliament to Mr. Eric Lubbock, MP for Orpington. Nine nurses carried from 30,000 petition signatures in large white boxes each painted with the letter from the word 'Orpington' and on the reverse side each box bore a red cross. The nurses were accompanied by several Citizen Members of the Orpington Nurses and Citizens Association. Although the petition refers specifically to Orpington Hospital, it is known that a shortage of nurses is affecting many hospitals in Britain. The nurses were not agitating for more pay and less working hours, but they were calling specifically for increased nursing establishment - in other words authority to recruit more nurses.
