Wilfred Clocks Off. 64 year old Wilfred Cripps of South London has had a very winding job. For the past 34 years exactly, Wilfred has wound his way up the 225 steps of the spiral staircase to the mechanism of the clock tower in London's St Pauls Cathedral. When he reaches the top, a little breathless, Wilfred has had some more winding to do - a little matter of 935 turns of the handle of the clock, to complete the daily task. In between times, Wilfred has also been concerned with fire prevention at the cathedral. With Wilfred's, retirement a new man has taken over the task, but he won't have it for long, because the clock is shortly to be electrified. Our Picture Shows: Wilfred Cripps winds the handle of the clock at St Paul's Cathedral - 935 times - on his last day at the Cathedral. 15th July 1969
