Penlee Life Boat Disaster, pictures taken 20th December 1981.The Penlee life boat was launched from the Cornish village of Mousehole at exactly 20:12 on Saturday night (19th) after the freighter Union Star sent out a distress call. At 21:22 coxswain Trevelyan Richards radioed that he had managed to get four people aboard. Then there was silence.All hope has now been abandoned for the lifeboatmen and the eight people from the freighter.The Union Star, on its maiden voyage, lays capsized and shattered at the foot of cliffs at Tater Du, just along the coast from Mousehole. All day, wreckage from the lifeboat Solomon Browne has been washed up along the Cornish coast.
