Birtley, Durham Chemicals, Leeds, Edinburgh
The Leeds to Edinburgh Inter-City 125 express was derailed on 1st August, 1984. Six of the eight carriages left the rails at Birtley and two plunged down an embankment. One carriage overturned in the plunge. The accident was next to the Mary Avenue Durham Chemicals plant and the plant's workers were among the first on the scene to free passengers from the carriages.
