Flixborough, Scunthorpe, Humberside, four miles
The Nypro Chemical Plant explosion at Flixborough, Lincolnshire June 1974. The huge explosion destroyed a nylon factory at Flixborough on Humberside, killing 28 people and wiping out the factory and half of the nearby village. The dead had been working in the plant's central control room and had only a few seconds' warning. People living four miles away in Scunthorpe were knocked to the ground by the shockwaves.
