Emergency Ward on Board a Ship: The atmosphere in the seamen's mess on a cargo ship is tense. All eyes are fixed on the shaggy bundle that lies, half- wrapped in a sheet on the dining-table. And a doctor leans over the still body, performing an emergency operation to save an eye of the ship's pal - a mongrel dog called Hans. The operation was carried out abroad the German coaster, Maria Schulte, as it lay at anchor in London Docks. Hans developed a serious eye complaint just before the ship arrived in London. Quarantine regulations prevented him from going ashore to an animal hospital. So the anxious crew sent an S.O.S to the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals. Two vets were given permission to go abroad. After the operation, Hans was carried up to the deck to recover from the anaesthetic. Hours later, the Maria Schulte sailed for Russia with a cargo of timber. For little Hans, who was said to be making a fine recovery" it will be a "get-fit" trip. After the operation....two seamen watch over Hans, covered with a coat, as he recovers on deck. July 1963 P000715"
