Fire at Woolworths departent store in central Manchester, Tuesday 8th May 1979.The store was the largest Woolworths in Europe, with six floors plus two basement levels.The fire, which started in the second floor furnishing department, killed nine shoppers and one member of staff.It is believed that the fire was started by a damaged electrical cable, which had furniture stacked in front of it.
