Operation Substanc, Mediterranean, Malta
Sending up a pall of smoke into the air over the Mediterranean, is F Class destroyer H.M.S. Fearless. She was one of the vessels escorting a convoy for Malta code named Operation Substanc, which was viciously attacked by Axis air and naval forces. The convoy got through without loss except for the Fearless. And the Axis didn't even sink that one. They damaged her, and she had to be sunk by our own forces. Past the funeral pyre of her burning can be seen some of the ships she died to defend. July 1941 P012330
