Students from Manchester University demonstrate against British policy in Egypt during the Suez Crisis 1956In October 1956, Egypt's President Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal. Israeli promptly attacked, followed by the landing of British and French troops. Domestic opposition was overtaken by a Soviet protest and non-support from the US, leading to the withdrawal of troops and the resignation of Prime Minister Anthony Eden.
