Trug Makers at Herstmonceux, East Sussex, the local industry is the making of the famous Sussex Trug Baskets. The trugs are handmade from willow board and the frames are chesnut. Adzes are used in the shaping and the wood cut in local plantations. Trug baskets were first made by the late Mr. Thomas Smith, over 100 years ago and the industry is now carried on by his family. Trugs are dollar earners - many are sent to America. December 1952
