Although never officially confirmed, the Great Western Railway???s No. 3400 City of Truro is forever associated with being the first locomotive to achieve 100mph, while hauling the Ocean Mails Special from Plymouth to London Paddington, on May 9, 1904. Retired in 1931, it was restored to working order in 2004 for ??130,000, to mark the 100th anniversary of its record-breaking run.
