Yoko Ono untying the ropes to dedicate the new trees.Hundreds of fans turned out to give a warm welcome to artist Yoko Ono during a visit to Coventry. The 72-year-old widow of murdered Beatle John Lennon visited the city to launch Coventry Peace Month. Her visit came 37 years after she and Lennon planted two acorns beneath a decorative white wrought-iron bench against the backdrop of Coventry Cathedral.Yesterday she dedicated two oak trees to peace and reconciliation.During the ceremony, on Unity Lawn, Yoko met scores of people including staff and pupils of Southfields Primary School in Hillfields, Lord Mayor, Cllr Ram Lakha, the Dean of Coventry, the Very Rev John Irvine and the Bishop of Warwick, the Rt Rev John Stroyan.Addressing the 200-strong crowd, she said: It is a great honour to be here today and to be here at the beginning of the month of peace."In 1968 John and I sat close to this very spot and this was to be the first of many peace events we did."It is great to be back here 37 years later to continue something we started here. John would have loved it."Yoko, who wore a black outfit, a cream French-style cap and Chanel sunglasses, smiled as Southfields pupils Shannon Bayliss and Tom Lockhart read out poems she and John had written to each other. She also heard the pair and seven friends sing Come On All Children before meeting the children and handing acorns to each of them and she met fans and signed autographs. After the ceremony, Yoko said: "It is so great to be back here in Coventry."I remember very well the last time we were here. There are so many people here today and John would have loved it. I am very honoured to be back."She added: "It is a very significant day that I was invited back - to launch Coventry Peace Month - and I believe it is my fate and John's fate that I am here again."It is fantastic what Coventry is doing and I hope you all keep doing it."We are all brothers and sisters and our hearts are one."Yoko Ono smiled warmly"
